Dietary Health Supplements – Are They Safe?
Dietary health supplements were originally developed to help us overcome nutritional deficiencies in our diets. We are all aware that a proper balanced diet, comprising of fresh fruit and vegetables, is essential to our wellbeing. We know that if we eat well, utilizing nature’s bounty, we will virtually receive our full quotient of vital vitamins and minerals, enabling us to live a healthier and happier lifestyle.
This scenario all but eliminates the need to take supplements, which in this case would only have a small effect anyway, and which could even result in producing a negative effect. However, not everybody eats a balanced diet. The reasons are many. Allergy to certain food groups, or we plain simply don’t like them, being just two reasons.
This is where vitamin supplements come in. Nutritional supplements are now in common usage in our daily diet, and to many people, they are the main solution to any health problems they suffer with. And these days we can barely turn over a page in our newspapers or magazines without seeing advertisements for “XYZ Supplement”. It is the same on the internet. We’ve all been bombarded with SPAM for “ABC Pharmacies” etc, or had our surfing blighted by pop-ups proclaiming “You will die young if you don’t take this pill!”
Supplements are here to stay, but how safe are they? The benefits and dangers of using dietary supplements are, and will continue to be, widely debated by the medical profession. The main area of contention being that we start to treat nutritional supplements as some kind of wonder drug, and not what they actually are – a supplement. They are there to assist us when we neglect our bodies, or our bodies start to fail us for one reason or another. There are also opportunities to abuse supplements and nowhere is this more prevalent than in the sporting arena.
Bodybuilders in particular want to be bigger, faster, and the normal diet alone is not enough. The normal diet cannot hope to keep up with the unhealthy pace of muscle growth that body builders strive for. So the temptation is there for the abusive use of supplements. To have a visible effect quickly, they need to be taken in large quantities. The final effects, however, usually turn out not to be so positive!
On the whole, dietary health supplements have been found to be safe. If this were not the case, we would not be allowed to walk into a store and buy them. Pharmaceutical companies would not be manufacturing them. If they are used responsibly they are, indeed, necessary. If people use them for what they are, a supplement to their daily diet to help combat any nutritional deficiencies they may have, and to maintain their health and well being, there is no reason to accept them as anything but safe.
The human body is amazing in its ability to repair itself after injury, or getting us through an illness, but it does occasionally require a helping hand. By ensuring we give it the correct nutrients, in the correct quantities, it can carry on doing the great job it does of allowing us to live healthy, happy lifestyles.
Until the next time, keep your chin up, and be wise.
